The name Montjuic is thought to originate from "Jews Mountain," in reference to the ancient Jewish cemetery on Montjuic hill, which no longer exists.

The current Montjuic cemetery contains around 150,000 burial plots, niches and mausolea with around 1 million remains in burials and cremation ashes.

Montjuic cemetery was opened in 1883 when the former Barcelona general cemetery in Poblenou  - now called Poblenou cemetery - became too small.

The Montjuic cemetery is managed by Cementiris de Barcelona S.A who offer guided tours.

Famous graves at Montjuic cemetery include Joan Gamper, founder of FC Barcelona football club, Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer who designed the 19th-century 'extension' of Barcelona called the Eixample area and artist Joan Miró to name a few.

The Fossar de la Pedrera (Quarry Cemetery) is at the foot of Montjuïc hill in the Sants-Montjuïc district of Barcelona and forms part of the Montjuïc Cemetery.

This former quarry was used as a mass grave for an estimated 4,000 victims of Spain's "White Terror", also known as "The Francoist Repression" (la Represión Franquista) which was a series of political crimes committed by the Nationalist rebel faction during the Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939), and during the first decade of Francisco Franco's dictatorship following his victory in the war.

There is now a memorial at 'Fossar de la Pedrera'. Since 1985 the site also houses the remains of Lluís Companys, the 123rd President of Catalonia, who was executed in the 'Fossa le la Pedrera' by the Francoist regime on 15th October 1940.

The Montjuic cemetery museum and Col·lecció de Carrosses al Cementiri de Montjuïc is a collection of antique funeral carriages and hearses.
